Visa Requirements for Foreign Nationals who wish to undergo treatment in India
e-Visa is granted to a foreigner whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sightseeing,
casual visit to meet friends or relatives, attending a short term yoga programme, medical
treatment including treatment under Indian systems of medicine and business purpose and no other purpose/ activity.
MED Visa: For the Patient who is to undergo treatment
MED X Visa: For the Attendant accompanying the patient.
Medical Visa
Eligibility and other conditions
A medical visa (MED Visa) is granted to a foreigner whose sole purpose is to seek medical treatment in established/recognized/specialized hospitals/treatment centres in India. In case the foreign national desires to avail of treatment under the Indian systems of medicine, his/her case will also be considered.
Med X Visa
Attendants/ family members of the patient coming to India for medical treatment may be
granted Medical Attendant visa (MED X visa) co-terminus with the ‘Med Visa’ of the patient. However, minor children accompanying a parent, who has come for medical
treatment on a Medical Visa, may be granted ‘X-Misc.’ visa co-terminus with the Medical Visa of the principal visa holder.
Validity of visa and extension of visa (in respect of all foreign nationals other than Pakistan and Bangladesh nationals)
The initial period of validity of Medical Visa (MED Visa)/Medical Attendant Visa (MED X Visa)
may be up to a period of one year or the period of treatment, whichever is less. The Indian
Missions/ Posts abroad may, however, grant a Medical Visa of 6 (six) months validity with triple
entry as a default option to all foreign nationals other than the nationals of 33 countries mentioned in para 19 (iii), (iv) & (v) in the document below:

Documents and Photographs required for Medical Visa
- Indian medical visa application form
- Photographs of Applicant as required
- Letter of Proof of residency in the state he/she is applying from (Country of Origin)
- Applicants under age of 18 should produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) signed by the parents.
- Original Medical Certificate from the recognized hospital or doctor in India where the patient intends to take treatment, with complete details of the medical conditions of the patient.
- Proof of required funds
Important points for Eligibility of Visa
Applicant should have consulted the healthcare professionals of his/her native country before applying for the medical visa.
Clear information that the patient has been recommended to pursue specialist treatment in some other part of the globe.
The applicant should demonstrate that he/she is seeking treatment only in a recognised institution which specializes in the treatment of the condition.
Please Note: ‘M’ visa applications in India have primary consideration by authorities especially for severe conditions such as Heart related ailments including Cardio-Thoracic/Open Heart Surgery, Neurosurgery, Severe Eye Conditions and Organ Transplants.
Registration with FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office)
Foreigners who come to India for medical treatment must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) within 14 days of their arrival.
Procedure for registration with the FRRO:
- Create a user ID and password on the e-FRRO portal.
- Provide a valid email ID and mobile number in India to receive a one-time password (OTP).
- Log in with the User ID & Password.
- Select the appropriate service and upload the required documents.
- Pay the required fee, if any.
You can track the application status through the portal.
The FRRO will issue a Medical Permit for a limited duration, which is usually less than 180 days. The primary visa remains valid for its normal duration after the treatment period. If the treatment lasts longer than 180 days, the FRRO can convert the primary visa into a Medical Visa
